Balkani Wildlife Society is monitoring 13 mammal species in Bulgaria. This includes the following: red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), European souslik (Spermophilus citellus), European (Cricetus cricetus) and Dobrudja hamster (Mesocricetus newtoni), lesser mole rat (Nannospalax leucodon), wolf (Canis lupus), jackel (Canis aureus), steppe (Mustela eversmanni) and marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna), pine marten (Martes martes), otter (Lutra lutra), wildcat (Felis silvestris) and red deer (Cervus elaphus). During the projects Balkani experts will develop scientific methods to monitor each species based on research of existing literature and practices. Habitat mapping and scientific methods for species state assessment will be developed. Spatial ecosystem model for each species status forecast will be created based on the data analysis from the field researches.Balkani Wildlife Society will organize a training for the experts from the centralised and local resposnible institutions.
