Egret colonies


All colonies known from the ornithological bibliography in the recent 30 years were included in the study. The following species were subjected to the monitoring: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Pigmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus), Grey heron (Ardea cinerea), Purple heron (Ardea purpurea), Night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), Squacco Heron (Ardeolа ralloides), Little Egret (Egreta garzetta), Great White Egret (Egreta alba), Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), in 27 colonies:

The colonies were visited beween April and June 2006. Two expeditions along Danube were conducted. The first was in April 2006 aiming at more-precise monitoring of the nesting Great Cormorants and Grey Herons. The second one was in June when all the nesting individuals were counted. The colonies along the Black Sea coast and the inland territories were counted in May and June 2006.
