West Stara Planina

West Stara Planina (Planina is Mountain in Bulgarian) is one of the best preserved natural areas in Bulgaria. The strict border regime with Yugoslavia before political changes in the country helped preserve a rich biodiversity including: 179 bird species, 14 species of bats and 39 species of other mammals, 11 species of amphibians and 15 species of reptiles, 69 rare and threatened plants species. This heritage was the reason for designating a number of CORINE sites in the area in 1996, and as such this is one of the priority areas for including in the Natura 2000 network. West Stara Planina is also one of the main sites, candidates for trans-border protected area under the initiative of the Balkan Green Belt.
